Traffic Accidents in Brazil: A Brief Overview

According to the Ministry of Health, around 40,000 deaths occur annually on Brazilian roads.

In 2010, the United Nations (UN) issued a resolution defining the period from 2011 to 2020 as the “1st Decade of Action for Road Safety,” setting goals to reduce traffic fatalities by 50% by 2020. In 2021, the UN launched the “2nd Decade of Action for Road Safety,” with the same goal, now aiming for 2030.

In this context, the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea) released the report “Review of the 1st Decade of Action for Road Safety in Brazil and Perspectives for the 2nd Decade” last August. Between 2010 and 2019, Brazil recorded 392,000 deaths in land transport accidents.

According to Ipea, the main causes of accidents on federal highways are: 1) lack of attention or reaction (36%); 2) disobedience to traffic rules (14.4%); 3) speeding (10%); and 4) alcohol use (5%).

Yellow May: A Campaign for Everyone

Why “Yellow May”? Because on May 11, 2011, the UN declared the “Decade of Action for Road Safety.” Yellow refers to traffic signs that indicate caution and attention.

Yellow May is coordinated in Brazil by the National Observatory of Road Safety, a non-profit social institution dedicated to developing actions that contribute to reducing the high incidence of traffic accidents in the country.
